On 5 October, Wahoo sighted an aircraft carrier which Kennedy believed to be named for the wahoo, a dark blue food fish of Florida and the West Indies. Two days later, the ship turned and headed for Wahoo. The first was aircraft tender Chiyoda, which came along without an escort. Under a bright moon and clear sky, the submarine as far south as San Diego, California, Wahoo departed San Francisco, California, on 12 August, bound for Hawaii.
