River Rouge: Ford's Industrial Colossus In 1914, Henry Ford ordered the construction of a small plant at the confluence of the River Rouge and the Detroit River in what was then the rural community of Dearborn. Eventually, that small plant grew into the gigantic Rouge complex, the most famous of American auto factories. In 1999, Ford's great-grandson, Ford Chairman Bill Ford III, announced that the company would reinvent the complex as the auto factory of the new century, scheduled for completion this year. Filled with evocative inside-the-factory shots, this illustrated 90-year history provides sprawling views of manufacturing processes, factory evolution, and the exciting new concepts Ford has incorporated into the redesign. Author Joe Cabadas also explores "vertical integration" as conceived at the Rouge--raw materials essentially entered one door and new automobiles exited the other. In fact, iron ore and coal were transformed into engine blocks in less than 24 hours. In addition to manufacturing processes that also included glassmaking and woodworking, the engaging chronological history explores the Rouge's roles as a crucible of industry unionization (at its peak in 1929, the 1,100-acre factory employed 128,000 workers) and wartime production, and its profound influence on Japanese automakers. Thanks to the Rouge's immensity and diverse operations, archival and current images provide a visual cornucopia for just about any reader, featuring shipyards and railyards, as well as newly minted military vehicles, farm tractors, and automobiles--not to mention scores of the men and women who have worked there.
Fords of the Sixties by Michael Parris, Continuing his classic series on Ford Motor Company Michael Parris gives us the inside stories of Ford during the total performance sixties. This decade brought us the Falcon, the Mustang, Shelby Cobras and motorsports wins from Indy and NASCAR to Trans Am and LeMans. Nothing was beyond the grasp of Henry Ford II and his great company. Style and auto racing were playing an important roll in Ford's-growth. Henry still called the shots, Iacocca brought on the Mustang and Carroll Shelby gave Ford the international respect in racing it sought. Henry wanted to buy, but Ferrari wasn't selling. So he turned Shelby loose with his Cobras and then the GT40s. And LeMans belonged to Ford. And in NASCAR, drivers like Fireball Roberts, Freddie Lorenzen and Cale Yarborough were lighting the southern speedways on fire.
Ford Yamaha V8 engine - Ford Motor Company had worked with Yamaha Motor Corporation to develop the compact DOHC V6 Ford SHO V6 engine for the 1989 Ford Taurus SHO. When the time came to replace that engine, the company again worked with Yamaha to build a new V8 based on their successful Duratec V6. Ford Taurus - The Ford Taurus (from Latin "bull") is a midsize car sold by the Ford Motor Company in North America. Introduced in December 1985 as a 1986 model, Ford sold nearly 7 million Tauruses during its 20 years of production. Ford SHO V6 engine - Ford Motor Company worked with Yamaha Motor Corporation to develop a compact 60° DOHC V6 engine for transverse application. This V6 was to power a mid-engine sports car in the early 1990s, but that project (known internally as GN34) was cancelled. Ford Tempo - The Ford Tempo was introduced in 1984 as a midsize car. Available in 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan body styles (no station wagon variant was offered), the Tempo (and the similar Mercury Topaz) was an early example of the design philosophy that would bring about the revolutionary 1986 Ford Taurus; both the Tempo and the Taurus were designed by Jack Telnack.
